Chiefs sign Michigan product Shea Patterson, source says. KC now has four QBs again

The roster churn continues in Kansas City a week after the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Chiefs agreed to terms on a rookie free-agent contract with former Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson, a source familiar with the situation confirmed Sunday afternoon with The Star. The NFL Network first reported the news.

The 6-foot-2, 202-pound Patterson went undrafted during the NFL’s annual three-day selection process. He’ll take an offseason roster spot among the quarterbacks previously held by Kyle Shurmur, who was released on April 27.

Patterson split his college career with stints at Michigan and Ole Miss, passing for a combined 8,800 yards and 68 touchdowns with 27 interceptions. He reunites with a former Michigan teammate in KC: defensive end Mike Danna, whom the Chiefs selected in the fifth round of the recently concluded draft.

The Chiefs are now back to having four signal-callers on their offseason roster, a group including and headlined by Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. He’ll be backed up by Chad Henne, Jordan Ta’amu and Patterson.

In the past week, the Chiefs have added Patterson and veteran defensive end Taco Charlton, who also played at Michigan, while parting ways with Shurmur, punter Dustin Colquitt, running back Marcus Marshall and defensive end Anthony Lanier.

The additions of Patterson and Charlton give the Chiefs 92 players on their offseason roster, two over the 90 maximum allowed by the NFL. So, accommodating roster moves are pending once the two recent additions officially sign their respective contracts.
