Kansas City Chiefs releasing QB Kyle Shurmur to clear roster space, source says
The Kansas City Chiefs are making a move to clear roster space after the 2020 NFL Draft and slew of undrafted free-agent signings.
The Chiefs are releasing quarterback Kyle Shurmur, a source confirmed to The Star. ESPN first reported the news.
Shurmur, the son of former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur, joined the Chiefs last year as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt. He spent time on the practice squad before a brief stint on the active 53-player roster while starter Patrick Mahomes recovered from a knee injury.
He closed out the season back on the practice squad, and then signed a reserve/futures deal in early February.
The Chiefs entered the 2020 NFL Draft with 70 players on the offseason roster, and then added running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, linebacker Willie Gay Jr., offensive lineman Lucas Niang, defensive linemen Mike Danna, safety L’Jarius Sneed and cornerback BoPete Keyes during the three-day selection process.
Kansas City then agreed to terms with 18 undrafted free agents, which would place the team over the 90-player maximum allowed on the offseason roster once all six draft picks officially sign contracts.
The departure of Shurmur leaves the Chiefs with Mahomes, Chad Henne and Jordan Ta’amu in the quarterback group.
