Chiefs activate cornerback Steven Nelson in time for Broncos game

Secondary help could be on the way for the Chiefs.

Cornerback Steven Nelson, who opened the season on the injured reserve list, was activated on Monday, hours before the Chiefs were to take on the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium.

Nelson was put on injured reserve before the Chiefs’ first game after having core muscle surgery.

Last season, Nelson started the majority of games and the playoff loss to the Steelers.

The Chiefs’ starters at cornerback this season have been Marcus Peters and Terrance Mitchell, with Phillip Gaines as the third cornerback.

On Saturday, the last time he spoke to the media, Chiefs coach Andy Reid didn’t commit to playing time for Nelson.

“I’m just taking it day-by-day,” Reid said. “But right now, (Nelson) looked good.”

The Chiefs will announce their inactive players 90 minutes before kickoff.

The Chiefs are coming off their worst game in terms of pass defense, a 31-30 loss at Oakland on Oct. 19. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr threw for 417 yards, including the game-winning touchdown with no time on the clock.

The Broncos also have activated a player off injured reserve who will make his season debut Monday night. Linebacker Shane Ray, the former Missouri and Bishop Meige standout, as been announced as a starter by the team.
