At this point, it wouldn’t matter the opponent, because the Royals are on a serious roll.

With their 10-0 victory Thursday against the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium, the Royals have won six straight games, nine of their last 10 and 15 of 17.

By finishing a four-game sweep of Chicago, the Royals (23-16) continued their domination over a fellow American League Central club. KC has won 10 straight games against the White Sox, and 18 of its last 19 dating back to late in the 2023 season.

The Royals also have defeated the White Sox 11 straight times, matching a franchise record for the most consecutive victories over an opponent at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals had 11 straight wins over the Tigers from Aug. 3, 1988 to June 29, 1990.

Kris Bubic was a big reason for Thursday’s win as he extended the Royals’ stretch of sensational starting pitching. The left-hander threw seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts.

His season ERA dropped to 1.69.

“I think overall the mix (of pitches) was good,” Bubic said. “We didn’t rely on the breaking balls maybe as much today, but I thought the changeup, given eight righties ... that was probably the best changeup I’ve had this year.”

Bubic picked up three strikeouts on that changeup, attributing his improvement with the pitch to a grip adjustment made earlier in the week.

It was the Royals’ MLB-best 19th quality start and their starting pitchers have allowed three runs or fewer in 82% of the team’s games (32 of 39). And it was the Royals’ sixth shutout in their last 13 games.

Multi-hit wonders

The Royals didn’t have to lean on Bubic, because they pounded out 17 hits. Seven players had a multi-hit game.

Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. had four hits, including two doubles, with two stolen bases and two RBIs. It’s his eighth career four-hit game.

Designated hitter Salvador Perez had two hits and three RBIs, while third baseman Maikel Garcia had two hits and two RBIs. Perez’s RBI double scored Vinnie Pasquantino in the first inning and staked the Royals to a lead they didn’t relinquish.

Perez’s single in the third scored Witt to make it 2-0, and Garcia delivered a two-run triple in the fifth inning, doubling the lead. The Royals tacked on two more runs in the sixth.

Left fielder Jonathan India, first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, second baseman Michael Massey and center fielder Drew Waters also had two hits apiece.

The Royals scored eight runs after the fifth inning and broke open the game.

“That’s what we’ve got to continue doing,” Witt said, “is just do it from pitch 1 to pitch 200, whatever it is. Just keep tacking on, keep adding on, and just keep playing our game.”

Injury update

Kyle Wright made his second rehab start Wednesday night and allowed four runs in two innings with Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

“All things are fine,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Wright, who threw 49 pitches. “He’ll be back here at some point today. That was scheduled. We’ll just check him out and make sure he’s all right. ...

“A lot of times you’ll see a little bit of a regression in the second start after we know what he’s been through, how long this has been. So I think it’s absolutely something to be expected.”

Wright is coming back from shoulder surgery that kept him out all of last season.

Up next

The Royals on Friday open a three-game series against the Red Sox at Kauffman Stadium. Right-hander Michael Lorenzen will take the ball for KC, while Boston will start right-hander Hunter Dobbins. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m.
