WATCH: Salvador Perez breaks his belt during Royals’ doubleheader win vs. Rockies
Kansas City Royals star Salvador Perez was scorching hot against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday.
So hot that not even a broken belt could slow him down.
Perez was an extra-bases machine in the Royals’ doubleheader sweep of the Rockies at Kauffman Stadium. He finished the day 5-for-8 with four doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored.
In Game 2, Perez hit a screaming double off the left-field wall. He initially thought the baseball cleared the fence; realizing it didn’t, he hit the jets to make it to second base.
He was safe, but his belt didn’t make it. It broke in two as he slid headfirst into the bag, severed near the loop.
Play was halted momentarily so Perez could summon a replacement belt, which he donned before retaking his place at second base.
“They put some tape (on it),” Perez said with a smile. “I’m too heavy.”
Royals teammate Bobby Witt Jr. said the belt broke for a different reason.
“That’s what happens when you are that fast,” Witt said. “Just kind of the friction and the dirt kind of breaks it.”
Perez’s Royals teammates obviously got a kick out of the situation. There were jokes in the dugout and even on the local FanDuel Sports Kansas City broadcast.
“As one of the guys in the dugout said, ‘That belt had no shot,’” Royals manager Matt Quatraro quipped after the game.
Perez took it all in stride. After all, he helped the Royals earn a series sweep. Kansas City has now won four consecutive games after a 2-8 road trip.
“He squared some balls up there and it sounded good,” Quatraro said. “It sounded good and we’re happy for him.”
