How Bobby Witt Jr. achieved new career milestone against Colorado Rockies
Bobby Witt Jr. added another milestone to his career ledger on Thursday.
The superstar Royals shortstop ventured into uncharted territory in Game 2 of Kansas City’s home doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies, extending his hitting streak to a personal-best 16 games.
“I’ve just got to keep putting together good at-bats,” Witt said. “I still don’t think I’m where I need to be. And just so day by day we are going to get better.
“That’s what it’s all about. Just keep preparing how I’m preparing and take it one day at a time. Just keep trying to make at-bats to help the team.”
Witt, 1-for-4 with a double in Thursday’s earlier game at Kauffman Stadium, singled on an 89.2 mph cutter from Rockies starting pitcher Chase Dollander. The base hit concluded a seven-pitch at-bat.
Witt’s line drive also scored Royals leadoff hitter Jonathan India, who raced home from second base.
Witt now holds Major League Baseball’s longest active hitting streak. He entered Thursday’s games across the majors tied with Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena.
“Pretty impressive,” Royals outfielder Kyle Isbel said. “He does stuff every single day that I feel like is breaking a record. He is a special player for sure.”
Witt’s streak began April 8 against the Minnesota Twins. He has produced 20 hits and six RBIs during the sizzling stretch.
Just 24, Witt already has eight hitting streaks of at least 10 games in his career. Last season, he set his previous high — 15 games — from July 14 to Aug. 2.
“He’s the best player in the league,” Royals catcher Salvador Perez said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for Aaron Judge, (Shohei) Ohtani, but just to have him here in this clubhouse and him available to play every day, the way he prepares himself every day, is amazing.
“He is going to give you everything he has to try to win some games. He likes to compete.”
