You might have bid against Royals star Bobby Witt Jr. for that baseball card on eBay

Ooh, that Bobby Witt Jr. is one sly guy when it comes to his beloved baseball cards.

His fans know how serious the Royals shortstop is about them. He even had custom cards made last year to invite some of his teammates to be groomsmen at his December wedding.

But here’s something you might not know about the 24-year-old Texan: He uses aliases to bid against other people buying baseball cards on eBay.

He revealed this little secret to Clict Media, a news outlet that covers the collectibles industry.

In a brief interview posted to X on Thursday, a (presumably) Clict reporter asks Witt if he’s ever had to bid against other fans to acquire one of his own cards.

“Oh yeah. I got an alias on eBay and stuff, so a couple actually,” Witt said. “So then I’m out there bidding.”

He said he didn’t know whether people realize they’re bidding against him — just a rising MLB star with an 11-year, $288.7 million deal with the Royals.

“But yeah, I’ve gotten multiple cards of myself and other teammates and stuff on eBay,” Witt said.

Can you even imagine his fake usernames?

Witty_7?

Strongarm2000?

Stolenbases_30?

Ilovemaggie?

FellaWithTheHellaGoodHair? (Oh wait. Wrong team.)

Asked if he’s ever had to pass on a card because it was too expensive, Witt said, “Oh all the time.”

He said “anytime it’s a card of myself there’s no way, there’s no way, like I’m not paying that much for my card. And then I’ll always lower, lower, lower and I’m like, I’m not getting that.”

Witt was in grade school when he began collecting cards, buying boxes of them at stores like Target, unaware of their value.

“But then kind of as I got a little bit older I’d go to actual card shops and start picking out players that I liked,” Witt said in an interview with MLB’s Carded, a show dedicated to collecting baseball cards.

He recalled that when he was about 12-years old he bought a pack of cards at a Cape Cod flea market and wouldn’t you know it? The first card out of the pack was his dad’s card — Bobby Witt was an MLB pitcher for 16 seasons.

Witt spent more time in high school playing baseball than collecting cards. But he got back into it, he said, during the COVID pandemic. He started picking through his collection to see if he had anything of value and sent some away to be graded.

He told MLB’s Carded how surreal it was to see his own face for the first time on a card.

There are currently 4,983 Bobby Jr. baseball cards listed in the database of Cardbase, which helps users grow their collections of sports and non-sports trading cards and collectibles.

His most valuable card, according to Cardbase, has an estimated value of about $845.

Witt draws the line at paying $200 for a card. “I’m not doing it,” he told Clict.

So he probably won’t be bidding on the Bobby Witt Jr. 2020 Bowan Chrome 1st Sapphire Purple Refractor /10 PSA 10 Auto card currently listed on eBay?

It’s currently offered for $49,999.99.

Or best offer.
