KC Royals announce signing of closer Will Smith. He’ll play a key role in the bullpen

The Kansas City Royals have officially added a significant bullpen piece. The Royals signed closer Will Smith to a one-year deal, first reported on Sunday. They announced the news Monday afternoon.

Smith, 34, spent last season with the Texas Rangers. He posted a 4.40 ERA and recorded 22 saves for the World Series champions.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan reported the deal is worth $5 million in value.

In a corresponding move, the Royals designated reliever Collin Snider for assignment.

Smith begins his second stint with the Royals. He made his MLB debut with the Royals during the 2012 season.

Now, Smith returns in a potential closer role. He is well traveled and has won three consecutive World Series titles. Smith won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros and the Rangers.

In 2019, Smith earned his lone All-Star selection. He adds another veteran presence to the Royals bullpen that struggled last season. Royals relievers had a combined 5.23 ERA and faltered in high-leverage situations.

Royals general manager J.J. Picollo has addressed the bullpen this offseason. Picollo and KC acquired reliever Nick Anderson from the Atlanta Braves. He also traded Dylan Coleman to the Houston Astros and selected Matt Sauer in the Rule 5 Draft.

Smith will be tasked to lock down the late innings. The Royals have searched for a reliable closer this offseason and Smith fits the bill.

Last season, Smith posted a 3.35 xERA (expected ERA) and held opponents to a .262 wOBA (weighted on-base average), per Baseball Savant. These averages highlight two key metrics that determine a reliever’s success.

Smith was able to limit traffic in high-leverage situations. His wOBA was ranked in the top 7% of the league. He also had a 33.7% chase percentage as well.

However, Smith is not an overpowering closer. He averaged 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings. Still, he is effective due to the command of his off-speed pitches.

Smith relies primarily on his slider. He limited opponents to a .120 batting average and registered a 27.9% put-away percentage. The slider generated 43 of his 55 strikeouts with the Rangers.

The Royals will also value Smith’s leadership. KC has several young relievers who are developing in the majors. Smith also brings a unique dynamic as a left-handed closer who is another available option from that side of the plate.

The Royals will continue to reshape their roster. Smith is the latest addition to the bullpen that will be called upon a lot next season.
