Kansas City Royals deal pitcher Dylan Coleman to Houston Astros. Here are the details

The Kansas City Royals have made a trade at the Winter Meetings.

The Royals traded reliever Dylan Coleman to the Houston Astros in exchange for minor-league pitcher Carlos Mateo. The trade opens up a spot on the 40-man roster and allows for further offseason flexibility.

Mateo appeared in seven games with the Gulf Coast League Astros last season. He posted a 5.19 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.

Coleman spent three seasons with the Royals. He posted a 3.88 ERA in his Royals tenure but struggled in 2023.

Last season, Coleman appeared in 23 games. He made one start but allowed 18 runs in 18 1/3 innings.

KC didn’t waste time using the roster spot. The Royals selected Matt Sauer from the New York Yankees in the 2023 Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday afternoon.

Sauer spent time across two minor-league levels, plus rookie ball. He also appeared in 13 games with the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate. KC is required to pay $100,000 to the Yankees.

Sauer will be assigned to the Royals’ 26-man roster.

The Royals continue to be active at the Winter Meetings. On Tuesday, the Royals were awarded the sixth pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
