FRIDAY’S GAMES TO WATCH

FORT OSAGE (4-0) AT STALEY (4-0)

Fort Osage senior Skylar Thompson is rated by recruiting websites as the top high school quarterback in Missouri.

Staley might just have the state’s best defense.

It’s no wonder the two teams are unbeaten and tied atop the Suburban White Conference standings.

Fort Osage hasn’t lost a regular season game since Sept. 28, 2012. Its opponent on that night? You guessed it — Staley.

Staley, in coach Fred Bouchard’s final season, have been nothing short of overpowering defensively. Their first-string defense has yet to allow a touchdown this season. Eli Ross leads the team with 57 tackles.

“There’s a really good synergy among them right now,” Bouchard said after last week’s 21-0 win against Liberty North. “It’s a really good group. They rally to the ball.”

BISHOP MIEGE (2-0) at BLUE VALLEY (2-0)

It’s still relatively early, but the outcome of this game could dictate the rest of the season in the Eastern Kansas League.

Bishop Miege, the Kansas Class 4A Division I defending state champion, enters the game with a 15-game winning streak. Quarterback Carter Putz has stepped into the starting role with eight touchdowns this season. He completed 10-of-15 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns last week.

Blue Valley, meanwhile, had a scare when quarterback Colton McCumber was injured on the first snap of last week’s game. But the Tigers rebounded, sparked by four touchdowns from backup Matthew Dercher and came back to win the game.
