Park Hill, Lee’s Summit, Liberty, St. Pius earn Missouri high school football wins
It was another big night of games across the Kansas City metro on Friday.
Here are some highlights from Week 8 of the Missouri high school football schedule.
No. 24 Park Hill 45, Oak Park 0
Park Hill didn’t mess around in locking down a district bye on Friday night.
The Trojans, ranked No. 24 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, blasted Oak Park to secure the No. 2 seed in Missouri Class 6, District 8.
Park Hill (6-3) capitalized on turnover after turnover by Oak Park. Kaden Irving scored a four-yard touchdown run and then the Trojans recovered a muffed return on the ensuing kickoff.
Two plays and 14 seconds later, Jonah Weir plunged in from five yards out for a 14-0 lead.
Oak Park followed with a three-and-out, then snapped over the punter’s head. Park Hill recovered for a TD and the rout was on with 2:55 remaining in the quarter. The Trojans tacked on a field goal to lead 24-0 entering the second.
But Park Hill wasn’t done. Dante Dixon jetted for 28-yard TD and Damariyn Ford scored via a pick-six and it was 38-0. Dixon added a receiving TD to conclude the scoring.
Park Hill will face the winner of next week’s Liberty North-Oak Park contest in two weeks. For district brackets and more, visit 810Varsity.com.
Lee’s Summit 37, No. 4 Lee’s Summit North 16
Down 16-0 at halftime, Lee’s Summit decided to wake up and put away its district rival.
The Tigers scored 37 unanswered points in the final 16:52 of the game to stun host Lee’s Summit North 37-16 on Friday.
The Broncos built their two-score lead on touchdown passes from quarterback Stephen Thomas to William Ray and Avery Block.
But with Lee’s Summit facing a third-and-seven at its own 45 with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter, QB Preston Hatfield rolled right and launched a pass downfield to Karsten Fiene. Fiene caught it at the Broncos’ 25 and raced to the end zone for his 12th TD of the season.
And then the madness ensued. Junior Tre Flowers recovered an onside-kick attempt at the North 43. Two minutes later, Drew Benassi took a keeper in from the 2. A second straight two-point conversion made it 16-16 with 2:34 left in the penultimate quarter.
Lee’s Summit, which lost its first four games of the season before winning its last four in a row, held and took over late in the period. Hatfield completed a 19-yard strike to junior tight end Grady Ferguson to put the Tigers at North’s 1.
Benassi’s keeper — his seventh TD of the season — gave Lee’s Summit a 23-16 lead with 10:24 to play. Fiene scored on a fourth-and-2 at the North 8, then scored again (this time on a 20-yard run). He finished with three TDs.
Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit North will play again in two weeks in the second round of districts. By virtue of Friday’s outcome, the Tigers (5-4) will host North (6-3) Nov. 7.
No. 7 Liberty 42, No. 9 North Kansas City 21
Liberty already had a top district seed on ice, but the Blue Jays didn’t hold back at North Kansas City.
Liberty (8-1) concluded its regular season with a rout at Northtown behind Connor Hatfield’s two passing touchdowns and a rushing score, as well as 124 rushing yards from Colt Nolin.
North Kansas City (7-2), ranked No. 9 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, tied the game at 7 on a 33-yard TD pass from Mehki Fields to Reggie Smith. But Hatfield TD passes to Maison Bowman (29 yards) and Masen Bindel (15) — plus Hank Blackburn’s 15-yard TD toss to Brooks Ragland — made it 28-7 at halftime.
Nolin’s 28-yard TD run pushed the score to 35-7 in the third quarter. Another Fields-to-Smith TD pass covering 25 yards and Kobe Rhymes’ two-yard TD got the Hornets within two touchdowns, at 35-21, with 2:02 left in the third quarter. But Nolin’s second TD all but sealed the outcome.
Liberty receives a bye on the Missouri Class 6, District 8 bracket, while North Kansas City holds the top seed in Class 6, District 7 and enjoys a week off before facing the winner of a game between Lee’s Summit West and Park Hill South.
St. Pius X 21, Savannah 20 (2OT)
St. Pius X won a double-overtime thriller and handed Savannah its first loss of the season in the process.
The Warriors fell behind in the second quarter and didn’t lead again until the final snap of the game — on the extra point in double-OT, by backup kicker Carson Eckelkamp.
“We’re excited to move forward and continue on,” said Warriors coach Anthony Simone. “We built this schedule for a reason. It wasn’t by accident. It was to challenge us. We’ve done a great job of continuing to build every week so we can be at our best this time of year, because that’s when it matters.”
Pius grabbed an early lead after an interception helped set up a keeper by sophomore quarterback Jake Nichols. Savannah, which entered undefeated and ranked No. 2 in Missouri Class 4, came back with a rushing score of its own.
Then, in the final minute of the opening half, Savannah hit on a 43-yard pass for a TD to take a 14-7 lead.
Pius (5-4) tied the game on a 21-yard pass from Nichols to Brock Chisam with less than nine minutes to play. Both teams had chances to break the deadlock late in regulation, including, nearly, via a 33-yard field-goal try by Savannah (it was never attempted due to an errant snap).
Neither team scored in the first OT. Pius turned it over on downs and then blocked another Savannah field-goal try.
Savannah looked to be in good shape after QB Aiden Knechtenhofer’s seven-yard rushing TD. But Pius stuffed the two-point conversion attempt to stay within six, 20-14.
The Warriors then took advantage of the opportunity further by scoring on a dive by Cannon Cruse and converting the PAT kick.
St. Pius X will open district play next Friday against Winnetonka.
