Olathe West topped its Olathe district rival and clinched the Kansas Class 6A East’s No. 1 seed.
The Owls, ranked No. 10 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, handed No. 19 Olathe Northwest a 38-27 loss to secure the top spot on the east side of the Kansas bracket.
Olathe Northwest (5-3) pulled with two points, 22-20, after scoring a touchdown with 7:57 left in the third quarter. But the two-point conversion attempt failed.
Olathe West quarterback Brody Hale answered by connecting with fellow senior Sam Krzykowski for a 52-yard TD pass and 29-20 lead with 6:38 remaining in the third period.
Following a stop, senior Owls running back Josh Foland ran for a 21-yard TD and it was 35-20.
The Ravens scored again with 8:47 left in the game, but a 47-yard field-goal try by senior kicker Dylan Wiman sealed the outcome with 5:35 left.

No. 8 St. James 39, Blue Valley West 24
St. James faced a potential threat to playing host to its first playoff game on campus.
But the Thunder, ranked No. 8 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, pulled away from Blue Valley West for a 15-point win on a soggy Friday night.
St. James (7-1) entered the game in a four-way tie for the third slot in the Kansas Class 5A standings and led 29-17 with 8:41 left in the game. But Jett Nagy caught a tipped pass from 27 yards out and corralled the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.
The Jaguars forced the Thunder to punt with 5:53 left and were looking at a possible game-winning drive. But forced to punt with 4:52 left, West errantly went to a knee before kicking.
The Thunder took over at the West 19-yard line and Brayden Stoker kicked a 14-yard field goal to make it 32-24 with 2:57 to go.
On the ensuing play, senior Ryan Troyer picked off a pass at midfield and returned the ball 37 yards down the sideline to the West 14. Three plays after that, senior tailback Jake House scored the dagger from three yards out.
House finished with 172 rushing yards and two TDs. Junior quarterback John Hornback also rushed for two and threw for a third, finishing with 167 passing yards.
St. James, which opened its first season at its new football field this year, will play host to Shawnee Heights next Friday. Blue Valley West visits Shawnee Mission East in the Kansas Class 6A playoffs.
Olathe South 38, Shawnee Mission South 21
With a mix of Gage Lee and a defensive scoop-and-score, Olathe South leveled its record entering the postseason.
Lee, Olathe South’s senior quarterback, rushed for four touchdowns to help lead the Falcons to a 38-21 win over Shawnee Mission South at ODAC.
Lee racked up 112 yards passing and 85 rushing against the Falcons (4-4).
The Raiders got on the board first via Marquan Washington’s seven-yard touchdown just 2:36 into the game. Olathe South countered with a field goal.
The Falcons benefited from a Raiders fumble, returning it 53 yard runback for a TD that made it 10-7 with 26 seconds remaining in the first period.
Another five-yard TD run by Washington gave the Raiders a 14-10 lead early in the second — he would end the night leading all rushers with 140 yards on the ground.
From there, Lee scored four consecutive rushing TDs, covering 1, 3, 1 and 11 yards, respectively.
Olathe South next Friday evening will play host to Blue Valley Northwest at CBAC, while Shawnee Mission South plays Olathe North at ODAC.
