It was another big night of games across the Kansas City metro on Friday.

Here are some highlights from Week 7 of the high school football schedule.

No. 11 Olathe West 37, No. 13 Shawnee Mission East 28

Olathe West took a major step toward clinching the top seed in the Kansas Class 6A state playoffs on Friday night.

Both teams entered with a 5-1 record, part of a four-way tie atop the 6A East standings. But the Lancers’ loss, an Olathe Northwest loss and Free State being postponed while trailing 21-14 left Olathe West atop the seedings at 6-1.

The Owls’ Josh Foland helped the seal the win with a 49-yard run after an interception. Following the big run, Brody Hale scored on a QB keeper for a 37-28 lead with 1:56 left.

The Lancers (5-2) needed heroics from backup quarterback Vince Kopp, who replaced starter Jack Reeves after an injury on the game’s first drive. Kopp rushed for 4 TDs to help SM East stay close.

His final TD came via a seven-yard keeper with 6:31 to play. Olathe West took the upper hand early on after a TD pass from Hale was fumbled but recovered for the score. Then Hale hit Sam Krzykowski for a 12-yard TD pass.

Kopp and East cut into the lead, but Foland’s four-yard TD run made it 21-7 with 6:01 in the half. Hale’s 15-yard TD pass to Weston Voight gave the Owls a 28-14 halftime advantage.

Olathe West will face Olathe Northwest next Friday, while the Lancers play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest.

No. 12 Mill Valley 63, No. 15 Olathe Northwest 28

Max Piva and Blake Jay seemingly traded trips to the end zone as Mill Valley made this one a laugher — and a winner for the Class 5A ranks.

Mill Valley, No. 12 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, improved to 5-2, while No. 15 and 6A Olathe Northwest fell to 5-2. The Ravens had entered the night in a four-way tie for the top playoff spot in Kansas 6A.

With the score 7-7, junior running back Piva took a pitch to the right and raced 75 yards for a Jaguars touchdown. Then, on the next Mill Valley offensive possession, Piva rumbled 57 yards to set up a QB keeper by Jaguars signal-caller Jay.

Another rushing TD by Jay made it 27-7 Mill Valley with 4:58 left before halftime. Piva scored again, however, and it was 35-7 at the break.

Olathe Northwest cut it to 35-21 in the third quarter, but Piva found the end zone again. Both Piva and Jay would do so a final time to round out the scoring.

Jay finished with four rushing TDs and one through the air. Piva scored three on the ground and one on a catch.

Mill Valley will take on Shawnee Mission North next Friday night, while Olathe Northwest faces Olathe West.

No. 20 Gardner Edgerton 55, Olathe South 35

If there were any doubts about the efficacy of the Gardner Edgerton ground game entering the Kansas state playoffs, they were put to rest Friday night.

Senior running back Syre Padilla scored five touchdowns to help lead the Trailblazers to a 20-point win.

Padilla scored an 80-yard TD on the first play of the game. Then, a botched kickoff return by the Falcons helped set up Carson McCall’s TD via a quarterback keeper.

Olathe South (3-4) kept it close as quarterback Gage Lee ripped off a 65-yard TD run. McCall connected with Vincent VanDellen for a 31-yard scoring strike, but the Falcons again countered, this time with Lee’s six-yard TD run.

The Blazers opened the floodgates at that point, however, scoring on four straight drives — each capped with TD runs by Padilla (22, 24, 3 and 2 yards). When the smoke cleared, Gardner Edgerton led 48-14.

The Trailblazers (5-2) now sit locked in a tie with Olathe Northwest, Shawnee Mission East and possibly Free State (game postponed, to continue Saturday) for second in the Kansas Class 6A playoff standings.

Gardner Edgerton finishes its iregular season at Shawnee Mission West next Friday evening, while Olathe South plays host to Shawnee Mission South.
