Blue Springs South, Lee’s Summit North, Belton roll to wins in Missouri football
It was another big night of games across the Kansas City metro on Friday.
Here are some highlights from Week 8 of the Missouri high school football schedule.
No. 2 Blue Springs South 35, No. 7 Blue Springs 7
Blue Springs South jumped on its district rival early and often and put away another impressive victory.
The Jaguars, ranked No. 2 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, vaulted to a 28-0 halftime cushion and coasted from there against No. 7 Blue Springs at Peve Stadium.
Blue Springs South (8-0) scored on its first three possessions, starting with an opening drive that included passes from senior quarterback Ayden Wilhelm to Gavin Nash for 20 yards, Cam Riley for 14 and six — for six points — to Gary Hill.
After a Wildcats punt, Hill’s 18-yard reception highlighted a drive the Jaguars started at their own 20. Wilhelm finished that march by scooping up a busted play and proceeding into the end zone with 1:08 left in the first period.
Darius Morgan scored Blue Springs South’s third TD via a one-yard run. And Gavin Nash’s touchdown reception before halftime made it 28-0 at the intermission.
Blue Springs South will conclude its regular-season schedule next Friday against Lee’s Summit West, while Blue Springs travels to Liberty North.
No. 6 Lee’s Summit North 20, Lee’s Summit West 17
It took longer than expected, but Lee’s Summit North eventually topped a district rival ... before facing another in a week.
The Broncos, ranked No. 6 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, rallied from two scores down in the fourth quarter for a 20-17 win at Lee’s Summit West. North (6-2) will play host to Lee’s Summit next Friday.
Upset-minded Lee’s Summit West (3-5) held a 10-6 halftime lead, and the score stayed that way until late in the third quarter. The Titans held the Broncos to a three-and-out and then a punt from the North end zone died at the West 28.
Two plays later, senior quarterback Dawson Edwards fired down the left side to a wide-open Chris Harris at the 5, and Harris sauntered in for a 17-6 lead.
But the Broncos answered quickly. Senior quarterback Stephen Thomas Jr. lobbed a third-down pass from the North 42-yard line, finding William Ray at the West 23. From there, Ray sprinted for his second score of the night.
Tight end Brady Sibbing then caught a two-point conversion pass to make it 17-14 with 11:20 remaining.
North held the Titans and the Broncos had one last shot. A pass interference call on third down helped them advance to midfield. On first-and-10 with 4:33 left from the West 48, junior Josiah Robinson took a handoff to the right and streaked 48 yards down the sideline for a go-ahead TD.
In the final minute, West advanced to the North 25. But a sack by Marcel Reed at the 40 sealed the game.
The Titans will finish their regular season at Blue Springs South next Friday night.
Belton 48, Truman 34
Belton closed out its home campaign with a second-half thriller.
The Pirates (4-4) scored three times in the fourth quarter to take down the Patriots (2-6).
“It was a crazy game and Truman has some unbelievable athletes, but our guys stuck together and we overcame some adversity,” said Belton coach Jason Feeback. “I was really pleased with our effort. We were tough when we needed to be and (in) stopping them on their last drive.”
With 10:28 left, Belton attempted a squib kick. It was recovered by Truman at the 46-yard line. Patriots junior running back Doral Thompson Jr. then broke away for a 46-yard TD run to tie it at 34-34.
The Pirates answered on senior QB Cooper Shrum’s keeper on third-and-two. Belton forced a turnover on downs and returned to the red zone, where junior running back Eden Loza ran in the game’s final score. Loza finished with 93 yards and two rushing TDs.
“Coach told us all week to just keep moving the needle to get the lead and for our defense to get back on the field and seal the game,” Shrum said. “My teammates played great. We had some ups and downs, but I told them to flush those mistakes and we came out with the win.
“It feels great with all the seniors, all the guys I grew up with here, and it felt great to share the field with them one last time in Belton.”
Shrum led the Pirates with 171 passing yards and two TDs, while junior wide receiver Caleb Campbell piled up 81 receiving yards and a TD. Junior running back Aaden Hall led the way on the ground with 171 rushing yards and two TDs.
