It was another big night of games across the Kansas City metro on Friday.

Here are some highlights from Week 6 of the high school football schedule.

No. 5 Rockhurst 36, No. 3 St. Thomas Aquinas 35

Rockhurst and St. Thomas Aquinas have given fans some exciting games the last few years. Friday’s matchup delivered another thriller.

For the third straight fall in a series revived in 2022, the powerhouses needed overtime to decide the victor. In this edition, the Hawklets answered an Aquinas TD in OT, then scored a two-point conversion to win by a point.

Rockhurst, ranked No. 5 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, rallied late, taking over at the Aquinas 35 with 6:16 left. Down 28-21, the Hawklets rolled to an 11-play drive featuring two 4th-down conversions and culminating in Garrett Miller’s four-yard TD pass to fellow junior Blake Thomas.

That made it 28-28 with 2:18 left. Rockhurst (6-1) held the Saints and actually attempted a field goal in the final seconds of regulation, but Aquinas blocked the kick.

The Saints’ Cal Arndt scored a two-yard touchdown to open overtime and make it 35-28. The senior tailback finished with 229 rushing yards and four TDs.

Rockhurst’s Cash Lewandowski scored his third TD of the night to make it 35-34. Then Miller rolled to his right and found Warren Robertson for the game-winning score.

The Hawklets flooded the end zone after their walkoff win.

Earlier highlights included a 60-yard bomb from Miller to Tristan Johnson for a TD, followed by Miller hitting Robertson for the two-point conversion and 22-15 Rockhurst lead.

Aquinas answered that TD: Sophomore quarterback Luke Bernhardt lobbed a 25-yard TD pass to junior Jack Lambert.

Rockhurst beat host Aquinas 45-44 in 2023, with a blocked PAT sealing the win. Aquinas won 14-13 last year at Rockhurst.

Rockhurst will travel to Liberty North next Friday, while the Saints will visit Blue Valley Northwest.

No. 20 Olathe West 52, No. 8 Mill Valley 36

How could Olathe West back up last week’s historic win over Gardner Edgerton? A Friday victory against perennial power Mill Valley would do the trick.

And sure enough, the Owls — ranked No. 20 in the 810 Varsity Top 25 — opened the floodgates at No. 8 Mill Valley. The win follows the Owls’ program-first win victory over Gardner Edgerton, 49-21, one week prior.

“A lot of people doubted us coming into this game, but we stuck with the guys in our locker room, and we ended up getting the win,” said senior Owls quarterback Brady Hale.

Hale and fellow senior Jack Foland helped Olathe West to a 17-7 halftime lead with rushing touchdowns. Foland finished with 12 carries for 147 yards as the Owls racked up 352 rushing yards as a team.

Both teams scored to open the second half and make it 24-14. But Cash Warren darted for 73 yards on a screen pass to make it 31-14 with 3:10 left in the third — he’d finish with 67 rushing yards, 80 receiving yards and two TDs.

With 6:21 left in the game, Hale completed a 25-yard pass to junior Cabe Roberson to make it 38-14. Hale finished 11 of 19 for 207 yards through the air.

“I give all the credit to the O-line,” Hale said. “They set the tone up front, giving me the time and space to create those explosive plays that won us the game.”

The Jags weren’t done, though, as senior Blake Jay responded with a TD of his own. From there it went back and forth, with each team scoring on its next two possessions ... but Mill Valley could not catch up.

Olathe West (5-1) will play host to Shawnee Mission East next Friday, while Mill Valley (4-2) will travel to Olathe Northwest.

Blue Valley 30, Blue Valley Northwest 14

Blue Valley’s Dan Sogard hit a pair of Locketts for touchdowns as the Tigers beat a rival.

Sogard opened the game with a quick pass in the slot to Jacob Lockett, who raced to an 80-yard TD just 11 seconds in.

Blue Valley eventually held a 16-7 lead. Miller Simpson hauled in an interception for a TD with 1:55 left in the third. For a while, Blue Valley Northwest (3-3) hung in there with a 23-yard TD pass from Ethan O’Hara to Baron Marshall.

But Sogard again found a Lockett — this time, Jordan Lockett — for a 53-yard TD pass and 23-14 BVHS lead with 7:52 left. Taft Stueve capped the scoring with a one-yard TD dive.

Blue Valley (3-3) will travel to Blue Valley West next Friday, while Northwest plays host to St. Thomas Aquinas.

Olathe South 48, Olathe North 7

Olathe South showed no mercy against its long-time rival. Senior quarterback Gage Lee ran for touchdowns of 16, 49 and 15 yards and tossed a 44-yard TD pass to Trae Hayes to lead the way.

Dax Grissom added a 35-yard scoop-and-score to cap the scoring for Olathe South (3-3).

The Falcons will travel to Gardner-Edgerton next Friday, while Olathe North (3-3) heads to Free State.
