Below are recaps of the championship games of the 45th annual Jewell Classic, held Thursday-Monday at the Mabee Center at William Jewell College in Liberty.

The tournament field — featuring 24 teams playing a total of 33 scheduled games in four days — is broken into three brackets: The Patterson, Nelson and Holley divisions.

PATTERSON DIVISION

No. 11 Blue Springs South 55, No. 9 Raytown 50

Blue Springs South fought off Larry Porter IV and Raytown to win its first Jewell Classic title since 2018.

The Jaguars, ranked No. 11 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, trailed throughout the second and third quarters as Porter racked up a game-high 28 points in the contest for No. 9 Raytown.

But Blue Springs South (7-2) overcame the Jays as junior AC Rollins scored eight of his 14 points, and Blayne Marshall added five of his team-high 15 in the final period.

“This will be big going forward. We can (see) that we can win, and hopefully get to state,” said Marshall, the Patterson Division tourney MVP. “This will give us more confidence going into the tough upcoming stretch of the season.”

Blue Springs South has won five Jewell titles since 2011.

Third Place: Park Hill South 75, St. Michael the Archangel 62

All-Tourney Team: Blayne Marshall, Blue Springs South (MVP); Jaylen Craig, Winnetonka; Des Hinson, Park Hill South; Larry Porter IV, Raytown; AC Rollins, Blue Springs South; Michael Weis, St. Michael the Archangel.

HOLLEY DIVISION

Battle 70, Raytown South 48

Battle still has yet to know what a bus ride back to Columbia from the Jewell Classic with a loss feels like.

The Spartans wrapped their second straight tournament crown with a 70-48 romp of Raytown South on Monday night. Brandon Rooks II led Battle with 14, while Vernell Holt Jr. was tabbed the Holley Division MVP.

“The past two games, we weren’t using each other as we should’ve, but tonight was more teamwork and being aggressive,” Holt stated. “We have the ability to play together and our bench plays just as well as our starters.”

Battle rolled from the outset, leading 37-22 at halftime.

Donovan Fletcher-Pruitt paced Raytown South with 16 points.

Third-Place: Blue Springs 52, Liberty 48

All-Tourney Team: Vernell Holt Jr., Battle (MVP); Donovan Fletcher-Pruitt, Raytown South; Malik Lewis, Blue Springs; Zahir Ragsdale, Central; Brandon Rooks II, Battle; Isaac Woodard, Fort Osage.

NELSON DIVISION

No. 14 Park Hill 50, KIPP Legacy 46

For the second straight night, Park Hill found itself in a hole and climbed its way out — this time for the Jewell Classic title.

The Trojans, ranked No. 14 in the 810 Varsity Top 25, trailed entering the fourth quarter but surged for a 50-46 win to take the Nelson Division championship on Monday night.

Senior Cam Jones led the way for Park Hill with 22 points. He was named the tourney MVP.

“We worked hard for this all year, and (it’s) a great thing to happen to us halfway through the season,” Jones said. “They came out and pushed us, and we overcame adversity tonight.”

Park Hill (8-2) also trailed 43-33 in the semifinal game entering the final period, but rallied to beat Summit Christian.

The Trojans have won two Jewell titles in the last three seasons, and four since 2014.

King Smith led the Gators with 18 points, while LJ Torrence added 14.

Third-place: Summit Christian 67, Liberty North 62

All-Tourney Team: Cam Jones, Park Hill (MVP); Leo Gayman, Park Hill; Eli Herbert, Grain Valley; King Smith, Kipp Legacy; Mike Thomas, Summit Christian; Dallas Winda, Truman.
