Promising Missouri sophomore voted The Star’s high school football Player of the Week
Just a sophomore at Oak Grove High School, 30 minutes east of Kansas City, three-sport athlete Matthew Meyer is already making a name for himself on the football field.
Even though Oak Grove lost against Knob Noster 44-22 on Sept. 6, Meyer’s performance earned him The Star’s high school football Player of the Week.
Every week, The Star reaches out to high school football coaches in the Kansas City area for their Player of the Week nominations. The nominations are collected for a weekly poll, which is open from Wednesday to midnight Thursday. This week’s poll received 1,011 votes from readers.
“He is a very important piece for what we are trying to accomplish here,” coach Ryan Schartz said. “His selfless attitude and competitive spirit is contagious, and we are so glad to have him part of our program.”
Meyer finished the game with 90 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns. The wide receiver is looking to build on top of that during the game against Pleasant Hill High School on Friday, Sept. 13. Immediately after the loss to Knob Noster, Meyer said he was already thinking about the next game and what he can do to help the team.
“I am really excited about the match up, just need to stay focused and all of our teammates staying on the same page,” Meyer said in an email.
