Olathe East, BV Southwest, Bishop Ward, Miege reach Kansas soccer state-title matches

The Kansas semifinals for boys high school soccer were contested Friday at various sites around the state. And they were packed with excitement.

The Class 6A state final at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Park soccer stadium, will feature two Sunflower League teams. Olathe East moved into the match for the biggest hardware with a 3-2 overtime win against Dodge City, while Shawnee Mission West advanced by shutting out Washburn Rural 2-0.

In the Class 5A tournament at Spring Hill High, Blue Valley Southwest gets a championship rematch against Maize South and star player Vitor Geromel on Saturday. Maize South won last year’s title, ending BV Southwest’s streak of three straight championships with a victory over the Timberwolves in the 2022 finale.

BV Southwest advanced with a 3-2 win against Salina South on Friday night at Spring Hill. Earlier, Maize South sent St. Thomas Aquinas to the match for third place with a 3-1 decision against the Saints.

The final match of Friday’s lineup, in the Class 4-1A tourney at the Scheels Stryker Complex in Wichita, determined that Saturday’s championships will also feature an all-Bishop battle for supremacy.

Perennial powerhouse Bishop Miege edged Wichita’s Trinity Academy 1-0 to advance, while Bishop Ward outlasted McPherson in penalty kicks.

Winner of seven straight Kansas championships, Bishop Miege will play Bishop Ward for the 4-1A championship on Saturday in Wichita. While the Stags are regulars on this stage, this is the first state championship match appearance in the history of the Bishop Ward soccer program.
