Meet the KC Star/810 Varsity Team of the Week: Mill Valley High School volleyball
Mill Valley High School bringing home state title in the fall isn’t new territory.
But this time, for the first time in school history, the championship is in volleyball.
Last weekend, Mill Valley won the Kansas Class 6A state volleyball title in Salina. The Jaguars defeated Blue Valley North in the final (25-23, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center.
While the football team has won numerous state titles over the years, this championship is the first for the volleyball program.
And it’s a a big one.
“Being able to put that trophy in our school is very rewarding,” senior Kaitlyn Burke said.
There may be another state run or two ahead. Although Burke led the Jags with 349 kills as senior, freshman Riley Riggs recorded 299. Juniors Saida Jacobs (222) and Ashlyn Blazer (203) also notched 200-plus kills, while sophomore Ella Florez piled up 892 assists.
The Jags avenged a season-opening loss to Blue Valley West with a 25-23, 25-20 win in the semifinal. On Friday, Mill Valley rolled through pool play with wins over Manhattan (25-12, 25-18), Garden City (25-8, 25-20) and — in its only three-set match of the weekend — Olathe Northwest (27-25, 15-25, 25-16)
The Jaguars finished with a 37-5 overall record this season.
