Meet the KC Star/810 Varsity Team of the Week: Shawnee Mission East girls tennis
The more things change, the more they stay the same for Shawnee Mission East tennis.
The Lancers notched the Kansas Class 6A state girls tennis title this week, the fifth straight championship (and 15th overall) for the program.
The doubles team of Abby Long and Katie Schmidt claimed a state title in their senior campaign, capped by a 6-1, 7-5 win over Blue Valley Northwest in the final match.
Long and Schmidt teamed for 81 wins during their doubles career. Overall, Long ended up with 110 wins, Schmidt 95.
Seniors Katie Murphy and Ellie McDermed finished third in doubles. In singles competition, junior Ishya Bhavsar finished second. Junior Macy Garwood finished fourth.
Shawnee Mission East racked up 53 points as a team, easily outdistancing Blue Valley West (35) and Olathe Northwest (32) in the top three.
