Staley boys, Blue Springs South girls finish third at Missouri state hoops tournaments
The Staley boys basketball team and Blue Springs South girls team both earned third-place trophies in Missouri’s Class 6 state high school tournaments on Friday at the Hammons Student Center in Springfield.
Blue Springs South accomplished the feat with a 63-43 rout of St. Joseph’s Academy in which the Jaguars raced to a 10-0 lead to start the game. They led 15-4 after the first quarter and 29-9 at halftime.
Jaidynn Mason led the Jaguars (26-5) with 20 points; Saneea Bevley added 18 and Kendall Puryear 14. Kayla Jansen paced St. Joseph’s (20-11) with 20.
Incarnate Word (29-0) beat Springfield Kickapoo (28-4) 67-50 for the girls Class 6 championship Friday afternoon.
In the boys Class 6 tourney, Staley (27-5) claimed the third-place hardware with a 67-46 victory over Chaminade College Prep. The Falcons held a 38-25 lead at halftime.
Christian Brothers College (26-6) beat Nixa (28-4) 68-51 for the boys Class 6 title.
In Friday’s girls Class 5 semifinals at JQH Arena West Plains (26-4) beat Smithville (21-9) 48-37 for a spot in Saturday’s championship game against Whitfield, a 55-42 winner over Webster Groves. Smithville will play Webster Groves for third place Saturday at 10 a.m.
And in the boys Class 4 semifinals Friday evening, the Pembroke Hill Raiders (21-5) fell in a 39-38 semifinal heartbreaker against Father Tolton Regional Catholic (22-8) at the Hammons Center.
Pembroke Hill plays Central (New Madrid), a 48-39 loser to Vashon in Friday night’s other Class 4 semifinal, for third place at 10 a.m. Saturday. Father Tolton plays Vashon for the championship at 8 p.m.
