Blue Valley North wins Kansas 6A volleyball title, beating BV West in all-EKL final
It was all-Blue Valley championship finale in Kansas high school volleyball Saturday afternoon at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
But in the end, only one of the two neighbor high schools from Overland Park could hoist the Class 6A trophy, and that team was the Mustangs of Blue Valley North — champions of big-school volleyball in the sunflower state for 2021.
Blue Valley North (40-2, counting pool play Friday and Saturday’s semifinal/final) defeated Blue Valley West 25-10, 25-23 in a championship match featuring rival teams from the Eastern Kansas League.
It is the first state championship in volleyball for the Mustangs.
Blue Valley North advanced to the championship match by beating Olathe Northwest 25-16, 20-25, 25-23 in the early-afternoon semifinals. Blue Valley North went a perfect 3-0 in pool play Friday.
BV West (31-10) reached the title match with a 21-25, 25-16, 28-26 semifinal victory over previously undefeated Washburn Rural, which had also gone undefeated in pool play.
In the Class 4A final, Andale beat Ottawa in a hard-fought three-set match at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson. The final score in Andale’s favor was 26-24, 23-25, 25-21.
Runner-up Ottawa had advanced to the championship match with a 25-23, 25-19 victory over Bishop Miege in the semifinals earlier on Saturday.
Miege finished with a win later Saturday afternoon, beating Baldwin 25-18, 25-19 in the match for third place.
