Sophs rule 6A at Kansas high school cross country championships: See Saturday’s results
Olathe North sophomore Anjali Hocker Singh defended her Kansas high school cross country crown in the Class 6A finals on Saturday, winning the girls state-championship race at Four-Mile Creek Resort in Augusta.
Hocker Singh’s winning time of 17 minutes, 45.51 seconds was followed by teammate and runner-up Shea Johnson in 18:11.51. Shawnee Mission Northwest’s Paige Mullen was an extremely close third in 18:11.52, while senior Kaylee Tobaben of Olathe North finished fourth in 18:20.21.
Hocker Singh won the 2020 race as a freshman in a time of 18:39.16.
In the boys race, sophomore Micah Blomker of Shawnee Mission North earned the championship in 15:25.29. Shawnee Mission East’s Wyatt Haughton was second (15:40.28) and Carter Stewart of Olathe East was third (15:49.81).
In the 6A girls team finish, it was Olathe West, then Olathe North, then Blue Valley Northwest. Among the boys 6A teams, Olathe South placed first, Manhattan second and Olathe East third.
In the 5A boys final, also at Augusta Saturday, senior Logan Seger of St. Thomas Aquinas won with a time of 15:39.14. Ashton Higgerson of Aquinas was second in 15:51.02 and Great Bend’s Kaiden Esfeld was third.
Aquinas won the boys team title, with Blue Valley Southwest second and Bishop Carroll third.
In the girls 5A race, it was Mill Valley’s Katie Schwartzkopf winning in a time of 17:51.72. The senior beat out runner-up Grace Hanson of Piper, who finished in 18:33.27, and Mill Valley freshman teammate Charlotte Caldwell, who ran a time of 18:46.91 to place third.
Mill Valley took home the girls 5A team championship, followed by Aquinas in second and Great Bend in third.
And in the 4A finals at the Wamego Country Club in Wamego, Hayley Trotter of Clearwater won in 19:26.59. A pair of Eudora runners finished second and third, respectively.
Hanna Keltner, a freshman from Eudora, ran the course in 20:04.15, while teammate Sydney Owens, a sophomore, clocked 20:07.95.
Eudora won the team championship, followed by Baldwin and Winfield.
The boys 4A championship went to Sawyer Schmidt of Augusta and his winning time of 15:54.43. Buhler’s Tanner Lindahl (16:05.87) and Hayden’s Tanner Newkirk rounded out the top three.
The boys teams’ order of finish at the top went Buhler, Wamego, Augusta.
