Notre Dame de Sion’s Propeck wins Kenneth Smith Award as Metro’s top female golfer
Notre Dame de Sion High School junior Megan Propeck this week received the Kenneth Smith Award, presented annually to the top girls and boys high school golfers in the Kansas City Metro.
The criteria for the honor, which is bestowed to one female golfer in the fall and one male golfer each spring, also includes academic, leadership and community service accomplishments. The awards are sponsored by the Kenneth L. and Eva S. Smith Foundation; area golf coaches and athletic directors nominate candidates.
Propeck placed first at five of six tournaments in which she played this season (she was runner-up in the other). She shot a personal best of 64 in the Shawnee Mission East Tournament at Milburn Country Club to win by eight strokes.
She won district and sectional tournaments in the postseason and then finished second at state for Class 2 in Missouri after winning state titles her freshman and sophomore years.
”Megan was ever-so-close to winning her third straight state championship, placing second in spite of very difficult weather conditions,” Notre Dame de Sion golf coach Dana Hoeper said. “Upon completing her (final) round, Megan congratulated her competitor and immediately sought her teammates, asking how they played and congratulating them on their respective accomplishments.”
In the classroom, Propeck holds a 4.462 weighted grade-point average. She also volunteers through National Honor Society and S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and has organized fundraising events the past three years benefiting the First Tee of Greater Kansas City through the AJGA Leadership Links Program.
Patrick J. McMahon, a representative of the Kenneth L. and Eva S. Smith Foundation, presented a $5,000 contribution to First Tee of Greater Kansas City during a ceremony at Propeck’s school.
“Megan plays with integrity, humility and grace,” Hoeper said. “She always compliments her competitors’ good shots, even if her shot went astray.
The boys Kenneth Smith Award winner for 2019 was Blue Valley North’s Davis Cooper.
