Johnson County’s World Cup watch party has been canceled Sunday. Here’s why

A Johnson County World Cup watch party has been canceled for Sunday, June 28, due to an excessive heat warning.

The watch party was set to be held at Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park, where fans would watch South Africa versus Canada at 2 p.m. Event organizers said on Facebook that the decision was made after consulting with their professional weather partners.

The park did say that it would add another watch party this week. Fans can go to Shawnee Mission Theater to watch the USA versus Bosnia and Herzegovina match at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1. Registration for that watch party is available online through Johnson County Parks and Recreation.

The National Weather Service Kansas City issued an excessive heat warning from noon June 28 through the evening of June 30. High temperatures are expected to be in the mid- and upper 90s, while dry weather is expected to be persistent throughout the week.
