It has been great fun seeing videos online of how people in Lawrence have embraced having the Algerian World Cup team make its base camp at Rock Chalk Park.

Algeria has some cool team nicknames, from the Greens to the Desert Foxes (or Fennecs). They left Lawrence on Wednesday to play a closed-door World Cup warm-up against Bolivia, which missed on the tournament after losing a playoff game to Iraq.

The contest took place at CPKC Stadium, the home of the Current. The Current did double World Cup duty Wednesday as the Netherlands also trained at the Current’s practice facility in Riverside.

Amine Gouiri scored twice for Algeria as it thumped Bolivia 4-0. While the game was not open to fans, many greeted the team at the stadium and may have been allowed to watch.

“With a prestigious victory against the Netherlands (1-0) followed by a resounding win against Bolivia (4-0), Algeria has completed its preparations in the best possible way,” Abdou Djeddaoui wrote for LaGazette Du Fennec. “Twelve years after its last appearance at a World Cup , the Algerian national team will now approach the tournament with confidence. (Coach Vladimir) Petkovic‘s men will face Argentina, the reigning world champions, in their opening match of the competition.”

The game wasn’t televised but some highlights emerged on social media. These from Algeria FC will give fans in KC an idea of what to expect from Algeria, when it plays Argentina on Tuesday at Kansas City Stadium (aka Arrowhead Stadium).
