KC Current rolls out the orange carpet for Netherlands World Cup visit

The Kansas City Current’s official colors are teal, Heartland red, storm (blue) and white. But while the Netherlands is alive in the FIFA World Cup, orange will be the prevailing hue at the training facility in Riverside.

An orange carpet has been rolled out with Holland’s lion logo and color dominating the offices, health rooms, locker rooms and meeting spaces.

“The facilities are incredible for us to train,” said team captain Virgil van Dijk. “We have everything we need to prepare for games.”

The Dutch moved in on Tuesday, a day after playing Uzbekistan in a friendly in New York. This will be their Kansas City practice home as the team opens World Cup play Sunday in Arlington, Texas, against Japan.

On June 25, the Dutch play their final group stage game in Kansas City, against Tunisia.

Wednesday, the Netherlands worked out before about 1,000 fans who were selected in a drawing among Riverside residents and Current season ticket holders. The 70-minute practice was essentially a volleyball/soccer tournament with the net rising from the turf and three to a side.

Moments after a winner was determined, the Dutch players approached the Riverside Stadium stands, greeted fans and signed autographs.

Later, coach Ronald Koeman and van Dijk met a group of reporters with half of the interview conducted in English and half in Dutch.

The weather was a popular topic. It’s been sweltering in Kansas City since the Netherlands arrived, and temperatures reached the mid-80s during the Dutch practice.

“You have to adapt quickly,” said van Dijk, who plays for Liverpool.

Some Dutch players went for a walk on the County Club Plaza near their hotel on Tuesday, and van Dijk, noting few pedestrians, thought the heat kept people inside.

Koeman wasn’t interested in talking conditions.

“We will do everything to prepare in the best way,” Koeman said. “We need to talk about football.”

The weather might only play a factor in Kansas City early on. Holland’s first two group stage games are set for stadiums with retractable roofs, including a June 20 game against Sweden in Houston. The games are set for afternoon starts and the roofs are expected to be closed.
