Freshman Jayson Petty leads hot-shooting KC Roos to home win vs. South Dakota

The Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team led from start to finish on Saturday night in its game at Swinney Center against Summit League foe South Dakota.

Freshman guard Jayson Petty scored a game-high 21 points in pacing the Roos to a 81-57 blowout victory over the Coyotes.

Petty drooped in 5 of 6 3-pointers and was 8-for-11 overall from the field. Petty added five rebounds, a block and two steals as Kansas City pushed its record to 9-13 on the season, 3-4 in the Summit. The Roos are 7-2 at Swinney.

Khristion Courseault scored 17 points and Jamar Brown 14 for the Roos, who outscored the Coyotes 41-25 in the opening half and continued the hot shooting in the second half.

Kansas City shot 51.8% for the game and held South Dakota to 38.2%.

Lahat Thioune scored 20 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Coyotes, 9-13, 2-5 in Summit League action.

The Roos are set to play host to Denver in another conference game at Swinney on Thursday.

Contreras scores 24; KC women lose second straight

The Kansas City Roos women’s team did not fare as well in its game against South Dakota.

Alayna Contreras did her part for the Roos with a career-high 24 points (5-of-12 on 3-pointers and 8-of-16 overall), but South Dakota prevailed 72-62 in Vermillion, South Dakota.

Contreras had five assists to one turnover. Dominique Phillips added 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting for the Roos.

Kansas City is 10-12 but 1-6 in Summit League games. South Dakota, meanwhile, improved to 15-7 and 4-3.

The Roos will be back at it with another road game, this one at Denver, on Thursday.
