Missouri men’s basketball announced Friday that Nick Michael had been hired as the program’s new assistant athletic director for athletic performance.

Michael previously served as a strength and conditioning coach at Rice University in 2014-15.

“His energy and passion for developing student-athletes is unquestioned,” Tigers coach Kim Anderson said in a statement. “Add in the fact that he was an accomplished professional basketball player, and you have someone who we feel can connect with our guys and help them make the right choices, both in the weight room and nutritionally speaking. We feel he will help our players develop the strength and toughness that is necessary to be successful in the SEC.”

Michael replaces Matt Herring, who Mizzou parted ways with Monday.

Before his year at Rice, Michael, who most recently has worked as a personal trainer in Houston, was a strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth under Shaka Smart, who now coaches at Texas.

Michael, who played in college at NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College, spent four seasons as a professional basketball player in Germany and Ireland.

“My passions are basketball, fitness, and figuring out how to be stronger, faster and mentally tougher,” he said. “Being able to work at such a high level of college basketball with a staff that is high level themselves is a perfect situation.”
