Mizzou's SEC tourney fate hangs in the balance against No. 20 Hogs on Saturday
One final home game will decide Mizzou men's basketball's postseason fate.
One more chance to take down a ranked opponent.
One more opportunity to protect home court.
The Tigers will face No. 20 Arkansas for the second time at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mizzou Arena.
Razorbacks coming off big win
Arkansas successfully defended its home court in Fayetteville for its final game at Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday with a roaring 105-85 win over Texas.
Star freshman Darius Acuff Jr. showed out, dropping 28 points on the Longhorns while also tallying 13 assists. With the performance, Acuff became the first player in Razorback history to finish with at least 25 points and 10 assists in one game.
Though Acuff made program history, Trevon Brazile set a new career high with his own 28-point performance against Texas.
In the Tigers and Razorbacks' first meeting this season, Acuff scored 20 points - 2.2 points less than his average - in the 94-86 Arkansas win. The freshman guard scored 11 of his points from the charity stripe, while Billy Richmond III was knocking down shots.
Richmond shot 9 for 14 from the field, leading the Razorbacks in scoring with 21 points. Brazile scored 12 points but fouled out in the second half, limiting his impact in the matchup.
The combination of Acuff and Brazile coming off the 20-point victory over Texas is sure to be an obstacle the Tigers will have to handle sooner rather than later in the tilt Saturday if they hope to walk out of Mizzou Arena with a win.
Can the Tigers bounce back?
Mizzou had back-to-back road contests in the past week. Against Mississippi State, the Tigers showed a complete performance, not sinking down to the level of one of the teams in the back of the Southeastern Conference pack.
Against Oklahoma, Missouri could not say the same, as the Sooners made the Tigers pay for their double-buzzer-beater marvel in their first matchup earlier this season.
So, while Arkansas is coming in hot, the Tigers are coming off a 80-64 loss to a 6-11 SEC team. Now, Missouri has to take down the ranked Razorbacks if it wants a shot at the No. 4 seed or No. 5 seed in the SEC Tournament.
If MU falls to Arkansas, the Tigers could be seeded as low as No. 9, depending on the results of other games Saturday.
The Tigers are 5-1 in conference play with bounce-back wins coming off a loss. Additionally, they also recovered in their conference-opening 76-74 win over now-No. 5 Florida after the dreadful loss to now-No. 11 Illinois 91-48.
Missouri's only consecutive losses are the 78-70 loss to LSU on the road, and the 74-72 loss to then-No. 22 Georgia at home — one of its two home losses this season (Texas was the other).
Senior Mark Mitchell was able to drop 26 points on the Razorbacks in their first bout, while junior Trent Pierce collected 22 in the midst of foul trouble. Sophomore T.O. Barrett was playing a mental game in Fayetteville, Arkansas, that extinguished his usual fire on the court. Barrett got in foul trouble early, limiting his impact for the Tigers.
The home environment could potentially give Missouri its final lift to finish out the season as the team it could be, or the Tigers could find themselves buried by Acuff and company in their final home game of the season.
Only time will tell as the clock ticks down to one of the most significant tests Missouri has faced this season, against the Razorbacks at 11 a.m. Saturday inside Mizzou Arena.
