Dennis Gates has secured two transfer commitments in two days after being hired as coach of the Missouri men’s basketball program earlier this week.

DeAndre Gholston, a 6-foot-5 guard who played at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the last two seasons, is the latest on board with the Tigers. Gates coached against Gholston in the Horizon League during his tenure at Cleveland State.

Gholston averaged 14.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists for the Panthers last year. He shot 34.2% from three-point range in his two seasons with the team. He started 52 of 53 games during that span and entered the transfer portal after Milwaukee fired coach Patrick Baldwin Sr.

There are some concerns off the bat with his stat line, however. Gholston only shot 36.1% from the field and committed 2.1 turnovers per game in 2021-22.

Still, Gholston should make up for that on the defensive end, where he ranked in the 82nd percentile nationally last season, according to Synergy.

Gholston, who is from Gary, Indiana, brings a lot of experience to the Mizzou roster. He began his collegiate career at Kent State in 2018 and then spent a year at Tallahassee Community College in Florida before his two seasons at Milwaukee. He should have one year of eligibility remaining.

Gholston is the second player with ties to the junior college level — which Gates frequently scoured for talent during his time at Cleveland State — to join Missouri. Mohamed Diarra, a 6-foot-10, 215 pound forward out of Garden City Community College, announced his commitment to the Tigers on Friday.
