PREDICTION

About Kansas City: The Roos have lost two games to start the 2021-22 season, falling 71-56 to Minnesota on Nov. 9 and suffering a 89-57 defeat to Iowa on Nov. 12. Josiah Allick, a 6-foot-8 forward, was a first team selection in the Summit League preseason poll after averaging 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds last season. He played all 40 minutes against the Golden Gophers and had 21 points, five rebounds and two blocks, but only had four points and three rebounds in 21 minutes of playing time (he had four fouls) against the Hawkeyes. Kansas City had scoring spread all around in that second game, with eight players finishing with at least five points and nine playing at least 17 minutes. The Roos like to play slow under third year coach Billy Donlon, with an adjusted tempo rating of 67.0 on KenPom, which ranks 339th among 358 teams. Kenpom ranks the Roos No. 263 overall.

About Missouri: The Tigers opened the season with a 78-68 victory over Central Michigan. It was shaky at times, as they had a 19-point lead shrink to as little as two at late in the second half, but they were able to pull it out down the stretch behind the leadership of returners Javon Pickett and Kobe Brown. Transfers Ronnie DeGray III, Jarron “Boogie” Coleman and Amari Davis all made a big impact as well, combining for 41 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists. Perhaps one of the biggest questions for Mizzou right now is how coach Cuonzo Martin will handle the five position, as 7-foot-3 sophomore Jordan Wilmore struggled at times in the opener. Freshman Yaya Keita and Brown will both be options there as well, but how those minutes will be divided is yet to be seen. Kenpom ranks the Tigers No. 100.

Prediction: Mizzou is nearly at full strength for Monday’s game. Kansas State transfer DaJuan Gordon and freshman Kaleb Brown, who missed the first contest of the season, are both expected to be back, while freshman Trevon Brazile remains out — he wasn’t likely to see many minutes though. Gordon is expected to have a big impact on the court and should be slated in the starting lineup.

Martin has emphasized how much he wants his team to be able to play fast and score out in transition, but the Roos could make that a challenge with how slow of a pace they play at. Controlling the tempo and not succumbing to its opponent’s style of play will be key for Mizzou in this one.

Another key for the Tigers will be how they defend Allick. They can’t afford to let him got hot as they did with Central Michigan’s Jermaine Carter Jr., who had 19 points and made five three-pointers to allow the Chippewas to make it a close contest late.

This should be an easy win, but let’s not forget that Mizzou lost the last matchup between these two teams on Nov. 14, 2014, 69-61.

Missouri 73, Kansas City 61
