SEC Media Days going virtual, another Eliah Drinkwitz debut postponed
Often considered the unofficial start to the football season, the Southeastern Conference football media days are going virtual this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SEC announced Wednesday.
The four-day media event was scheduled for July 13-16 at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta. The SEC is following in the footsteps of other conferences opting for a virtual media day, including the Big 12.
“Conducting football media days in a virtual format will provide us the opportunity to manage the event in a healthy manner as we continue to be impacted by COVID-19, and will provide flexibility for our programs to adjust their preparation for the 2020 football season according to the preseason calendar that is expected to be expanded due to the cancellation of the spring football season,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a release. “We look forward to returning to our traditional media days format in 2021.”.
It’s another debut event postponed for Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz, who took over as the Tigers’ top guy last December. The pandemic has shook the sports world, but especially so for the first-year coach who missed out on spring football practices.
Drinkwitz was originally scheduled to speak on the opening day, right after reigning College Football Playoff champion and LSU coach Ed Orgeron took the podium.
Dates and times for the virtual media days has not yet been announced. Sankey will still give his annual “State of the SEC” address while all 14 head coaches will address the media.
