Mizzou women’s basketball defeats Mississippi in first round of SEC Tournament
The Missouri Tigers women’s basketball team got off to a strong start in the SEC Tournament, defeating Mississippi 64-53.
Mizzou guard Aijha Blackwell, fresh off on making the SEC All-Freshman team alongside fellow newcomer Hayley Frank, continued her stellar play Wednesday. She led the Tigers with 16 points while also grabbing six rebounds. Guard Jordan Chavis added 11 points.
The Tigers (9-21, 5-11 SEC) shot well from the floor at 50% and had a 10-point halftime lead. While they were outscored 16-5 in the final quarter, the lead was more than enough as Mizzou cruised to victory at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Tigers play No. 6 Tennessee in the second round at 8 p.m. Thursday in a game that will air on SEC Network. It’s a rematch from earlier in the season, when Mizzou fought the Vols on the road but fell behind in the second half. But Blackwell said the Tigers aren’t the same team from before.
“When we were down, we used to give up,” Blackwell said on SEC Network after the win. “But we don’t do that any more.”
