Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson will not play against Davidson, KU coach Bill Self announced Monday afternoon.

“He will not play tonight,” Self said in a pregame radio interview. “He’s not quite there. That’s where it’s at. We still think positive, but not tonight.”

It’s been an interesting year health-wise for Peterson.

Including the game against Davidson, Peterson will have missed nine of KU’s 13 games this season. This is his second straight game missed due to cramps. He missed seven games due to a hamstring strain, but returned when KU played Missouri.

In his second game back from the hamstring strain, against N.C. State, he experienced quad cramping and exited with 2 minutes, 15 seconds remaining. He did not return to that game, which went to overtime.

Despite the cramps, Peterson has continued to practice. He’s also getting healthier, according to Self.

“I think he feels better every day,” Self said Sunday. “He’s moving better. You see him at 70% and you say, ‘My God, he looks pretty good,’ until you see him at 75, until you see him at 80, until you see him at 85. He’s not perfect by any stretch yet, but he’s gaining on it every day.

“The situation is: When he’s ready, he’s ready. So we will just wait and see how that goes.”

Peterson has been hindered by cramping all season, even dating back to exhibition contests against Louisville and Fort Hays State. He missed the latter contest.

Peterson is averaging 19.3 points and 3.8 rebounds so far this season. Despite his health issues, he is still projected to be the No. 1 pick in 2026 by various media outlets.
