  • Bill Self reports Peterson improving daily; game availability hinges on Sunday.
  • Peterson has played four games, missed others for cramps and hamstring strain.
  • Despite limited minutes, he averages 19.3 PPG and retains No. 1 draft projection.

Freshman Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball star Darryn Peterson, who missed KU’s most recent game against Towson due to cramping, continues to get healthier, according to coach Bill Self.

But Self was unsure Sunday whether Peterson would play against Davidson on Monday, saying it depended on how he performed in practice.

Peterson has continued to practice despite his issue with cramps.

“I think he feels better every day,” Self said. “He’s moving better. You see him at 70% and you say, ‘My God, he looks pretty good,’ until you see him at 75, until you see him at 80, until you see him at 85. He’s not perfect by any stretch yet, but he’s gaining on it every day.

“The situation is, when he’s ready, he’s ready. So we will just wait and see how that goes.”

Peterson has just played in four of KU’s 12 games this season. And he’s dealt with various ailments along the way.

He missed seven games with a strained hamstring. In his second game back, against N.C. State, he exited with 2 minutes, 15 seconds remaining due to cramps. He did not return to that game.

In fact, he has played just 22 total minutes inside Allen Fieldhouse this season.

Before the season, Peterson missed time for what KU called a “cramping issue.” That limited him in the second half of an exhibition contest against Louisville and sidelined him against Fort Hays State.

Peterson is averaging 19.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in his four games. And in spite of his health issues, his draft stock hasn’t really changed. He is still projected to be the No. 1 pick in 2026 by several media outlets.
