  • Jon Jon Kamara was ejected in the first quarter vs. Wagner for targeting.
  • The penalty allows Kamara to return for the full game against Missouri.
  • Bangally Kamara (no relation) did not suit up; reasons for absence remain undisclosed.

Starting in place of Kansas linebacker Bangally Kamara, redshirt freshman Jon Jon Kamara didn’t play much vs. Wagner on Friday.

The 6-4, 230-pound linebacker was disqualified in the first quarter due to a targeting penalty. Jon Jon Kamara led with the crown of his helmet and delivered a big hit to Wagner wide receiver Zayden Davis, which triggered the flag.

The penalty was upheld upon review. Kamara was disqualified from the game — but there was a silver lining.

Since it happened in the first half, Kamara will still be available to play in the first half against Missouri, the Jayhawks’ next opponent. Had the targeting foul taken place in the third quarter or later, he would’ve missed the first half of that game.

Kansas coach Lance Leipold agreed with the call.

“Anything that’s leading with your helmet, and from what I could see on the scoreboard, he was leading with his helmet — that’s a learning moment and a fundamental thing,” Leipold said. “It’s not only for the defender, but it’s for him as well and his health. Here he makes a big play and he’s all excited. ... Next thing you know, his day is over. It’s unfortunate because he’s talented, quick and physical. I know he’ll be better for this.”

Bangally Kamara could miss time

Bangally Kamara, meanwhile, didn’t warm up Friday. It was initially unknown why he didn’t suit up vs. the Seahawks, particularly with the South Carolina transfer days removed from a stellar debut in Lawrence.

After the game, Leipold provided an update on his status.

“Bangally suffered a non-contact injury in Wednesday’s practice and his status will be unknown for a while,” he said.

The Jayhawks led 29-7 at halftime against Wagner and coasted to a 46-7 win. Their game against Missouri will take place Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2:30 p.m.
