  • Jalon Daniels praised former KU teammates Skinner and Grimm for NFL plays
  • Skinner recorded 4 catches, 48 yards and 1 TD in Jets' preseason game
  • Daniels named KU captain as team prepares for Fresno State season opener

Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Jalon Daniels is preparing for his final season of college football, with the team’s season opener set for Saturday at newly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

But he still managed to watch a little NFL preseason action on Sunday.

Among the highlights, Daniels saw former KU teammate and current New York Jets receiver Quentin Skinner haul in an impressive one-handed touchdown reception against the New York Giants.

“I was watching Q-Skin’s touchdown live,” Daniels said. “I got the chance to be able to see his second catch, and if I’m not mistaken, he had four targets for four receptions.

“When he lined up at slot in the red zone, and I’d seen the man coverage, I was like, ‘I’ve seen this before. So, let’s kind of see how it goes.’”

“He ended up running a corner route …” Daniels continued. “They threw the ball to the corner, and I said, ‘There’s only one person over there.’ It was a little bit in front of him and I was just like, ‘Oh my God, Q-Skin, that’s crazy.’

Skinner finished the preseason game with four catches for 48 yards and the touchdown as the Jets lost 31-12.

A few minutes after Skinner’s touchdown, another former KU receiver, Luke Grimm — now playing for the Los Angeles Chargers — returned a punt for a touchdown against the L.A. Rams.

“Two minutes after (an acquaintance) sent me Q-Skin’s touchdown, I go on Twitter immediately and (type) ‘Luke Grimm’ (and) look it up,” Daniels said. “I’m like, ‘66-yard punt return to the crib? Oh my God.’ You can’t say he wasn’t moving. You can’t say he didn’t have wheels there.”

Daniels will try to make some highlights of his own on Saturday as KU plays host to Fresno State in Lawrence.

He’ll be a Jayhawks team captain alongside offensive lineman Bryce Foster and defensive end Justice Finkley — an announcement made by head coach Lance Leipold on Monday.
