KU basketball player enters transfer portal as new designation comes into effect
Kansas men’s basketball guard Noah Shelby entered the transfer portal on Monday morning, a KU Athletics spokesperson confirmed to The Star.
Shelby joined the Jayhawks program last summer as an invited walk-on; as such, he didn’t count against KU’s scholarship limit.
He redshirted the entire 2024-25 season and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. The Jayhawks now have two roster spots remaining.
Shelby was able to enter the portal due to a new transfer window created for so-called “Designated Student Athletes,” or DSAs. The window opened Monday and closes Aug. 5.
This classification took effect recently following the finalization of the House vs. NCAA settlement.
An athlete qualifies as a DSA if they would have or had already been removed from the school’s roster due to the new House-mandated roster limits and was a member of a team during the 2024-25 season. The player also had to have been recruited/assured of a roster spot for the 2025-26 season.
These players are now exempt from the limits for the remainder of their career at any school they attend. They will not count against their new school’s scholarship limit.
Before joining KU, Shelby spent a season each at Vanderbilt and Rice. The McKinney, Texas native averaged 3.7 points in 14 games in his freshman year with the Commodores and 3.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game in 2023-24 for the Owls. He also shot 33.3% on 3-pointers.
Shelby was a four-star recruit coming out of high school, ranked No. 17 at the point guard position by 247Sports in the class of 2022.
