Former Kansas coach David Beaty lands new job. He’s headed back to high school football

Former Kansas football coach David Beaty has a new job — and he’s going back to his roots.

The Denton Independent School District announced in a news release that Beaty will be the new head coach at Denton High School in Texas.

“My family and I are honored to be at Denton High School,” Beaty said in the release. “This is an unbelievable school district. I am blown away by the quality of people here, and it is the people in an organization that make a place special. We are ready to roll up our sleeves and get going.”

The Jayhawks hired Beaty before the 2015 season after his three-year stint as Texas A&M’s wide receivers coach. During his KU tenure (2015-18), he finished with a 6-42 record.

After Kansas’ 27-3 home loss to Iowa State in 2018, KU announced that Beaty would not be returning as coach but that he would coach out the rest of the season.

Beaty would later sue Kansas, alleging it sought to create a reason to fire him for cause to avoid his $3 million buyout. Beaty earned a settlement of $2.55 million in June 2020. His last job was as wide receivers coach at Florida Atlantic.

The Garland, Texas, native now returns to his high school football coaching roots. Beaty was a head coach at North Dallas and Irving MacArthur before starting his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Rice.

He replaces former Denton head coach Billy Miller.

“Coach Beaty is an incredible coach with a long history of success in both high school and college,” Denton ISD athletic director Joey Florence said in the release. “His ability to connect with students and families will be an incredible asset. We are very excited to have him lead the athletic program at Denton High School.”
