Kansas Jayhawks football team lands third transfer of day: an Alabama cornerback

The Kansas Jayhawks football program capped a busy Sunday with its third transfer portal addition in a matter of hours, landing the commitment of a former Southeastern Conference cornerback.

Alabama transfer Jahlil Hurley is the latest player to announce that he’ll join coach Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks. He has three years of college eligibility remaining.

Earlier Sunday, KU received commitments from former South Alabama kicker Laith Marjan and former Ball State wide receiver Cameron Pickett.

This past season, Hurley played primarily on special teams for the Crimson Tide, seeing snaps in nine games. He redshirted during the 2023 season.

With SEC-level experience, Hurley should help replenish KU’s cornerbacks corps, which lost stars Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson to graduation.

Coming out of high school, Hurley was a four-star recruit who ranked among the top 50 prospects overall nationally (via ON3). He chose Alabama over Georgia, LSU, Penn State, Michigan and other schools.

Here’s what Cooper Petagna, a 247Sports National Recruit Analyst, wrote about Hurley:

“Fluid mover, shows the ability to transition smoothly in and out of his back pedal. Displays above average short area quickness and change of direction ability to get in and out of breaks. Shows the ability to play multiple positions in the secondary. Flashes some natural press man ability and ability to play in zone coverage or the deep hash at the safety position.

“Exhibits good ball awareness and production on both sides of the ball. Receiver skills and ball tracking ability translate to his ability as a cover defender.

“Willing tackler at the point of attack, will strike you. Shows the ability to play in space and make plays in the open field. Possesses above average play speed, tends to overcompensate with length and instincts at the position.”
