FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

To the victors ... Some KU football players are up for national weekly honors following last week’s upset over Texas. Running back Devin Neal was named 247Sports’ true freshman of the week, while quarterback Jalon Daniels is one of eight nominees for the Sugar Bowl’s Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.

A secondary concern. The back end of TCU’s defense has been a major issue this season, as the team is allowing 9.5 yards per pass attempt — the worst mark in the Big 12. In addition, TCU’s team “coverage” grade ranks 123rd out of 130 FBS squads.

KU’s QB question. A few weeks ago, KU coach Lance Leipold announced preliminary plans to redshirt Daniels at quarterback this season while keeping him at the allowed four games or fewer. Will that change after Daniels’ performance against Texas? The sophomore Daniels, who played in his fourth game Saturday, said about an hour after Saturday’s win over Texas that no immediate decision had been made on his status.

Kansas kid. TCU interim coach Jerry Kill has plenty of ties to the state of Kansas. He was born in Cheney, graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield, is a member of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame and previously had coaching stops at Pittsburg State and Emporia State before later serving as an administrator for K-State football in 2016.

Hanging in there. The KU-TCU matchup — for whatever reason — has often been closer than expected. According to the betting database at OddsShark, KU is 6-3 against the spread vs. TCU since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12, which includes one straight-up victory for the Jayhawks: a 27-26 home triumph in 2018.
