FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

Ending the hiatus. Kansas and Texas are renewing their series after not playing last season. The Jayhawks and Longhorns’ contest last year was first postponed, then canceled because of separate COVID outbreaks on the two rosters. Before that, the two programs had played every year since 2011, with Texas going 8-1.

Who will be QB? The Jayhawks’ quarterback position could be a question mark heading into this week after Jason Bean and Miles Kendrick were both injured against Kansas State. Bean’s injury — it appeared to be to his right wrist — was less severe, as he re-entered briefly in the first half before being replaced for good. Third-stringer Jalon Daniels, who had planned on playing four contests or fewer this year to redshirt, will be entering his fourth game this season if he plays at Texas. He completed 13 of 19 passes for 105 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions against K-State.

Big-time Bijan. Texas’ offense is highlighted by sophomore running back Bijan Robinson, who is second in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game (117) while posting 5.8 yards per carry. Pro Football Focus likes him as well, as Robinson’s 91.1 run grade is tied for fourth nationally among all running backs.

An opening? KU will face a Texas defense that has struggled at time to stop the run. The Longhorns have surrendered 5.2 yards per carry to opponents and also 201.7 ground yards per game — the second-worst mark in the Big 12 while only ahead of KU.

Almost an anniversary. The KU-Texas matchup will be six days off the five-year anniversary of when the Jayhawks defeated the Longhorns, 24-21, at Booth Memorial Stadium in 2016. Texas committed six turnovers, which helped KU to its first victory over the Longhorns since 1938. Former Texas coach Charlie Strong was fired one week later.
