KU Athletics reports no new positives in latest round of COVID-19 testing

Kansas Athletics released the numbers from its latest coronavirus testing Monday evening, and the results had to be considered encouraging.

KU reported that on Saturday, 136 student-athletes and 20 staff members were tested for COVID-19 as part of ongoing maintenance procedures. Each of the 156 tests came back negative.

The school’s release did not give specifics on the testing numbers for each sport.

Last week, KU’s football team resumed voluntary workouts after they had been shut down for nearly three weeks because of a coronavirus outbreak. Athletic director Jeff Long said then, in a statement, that there were four positive tests among 90 athletes, coaches and staff that were tested, with those individuals required to follow isolation protocols.

Long originally announced July 3 that KU football had suspended workouts with a two-week self-quarantine after 12 players tested positive for coronavirus. That was up from one positive test when KU’s football players initially arrived on campus in mid-June.

KU football is scheduled to open the season in one month’s time, playing host to newly scheduled Southern Illinois on Aug. 29. Gametime and TV information has not been released.
