Watch the emotional NFL Draft call from Tampa Bay to K-State star Jacob Parrish
Nothing beats the moment when a college football player learns he has been selected in the NFL Draft.
It usually happens before the pick is publicly announced on national TV. The general manager or the head coach of a professional football team typically calls the player they are about to select to inform him of the good news.
It’s one of the happiest moments in sports.
Players smile and slip on gear from their new team. Family members cheer and celebrate the transaction as if it happened to them. Hugs and high fives are exchanged.
All of that, and more, was on display at Jacob Parrish’s home on Friday night. The Olathe product and former Kansas State football star received word that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would select him with the No. 84 overall pick in the draft, and pandemonium ensued.
Check out the video.
Just like that, his life changed forever.
Parrish, a 5-foot-10 and 191-pound cornerback, rocketed up draft boards after he decided to forgo his senior year of college football and declare for the NFL Draft.
He said he wanted to prove he had NFL speed, and he did exactly that by running the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
From that point on, it was clear he could help a professional team at the next level.
Add that to a stellar career at K-State that featured 50 tackles and seven pass breakups as a junior, and he quickly became the Wildcats’ best draft prospect in this class.
Most expected him to be selected on the second day of the NFL Draft. It was just a matter of when.
The Buccaneers ended the drama on Friday night when they selected him in the third round. He will be expected to make an impact early during his professional career as a plug-and-play corner who is capable of shutting down wide receivers in the passing game.
