K-State Wildcats running back DJ Giddens selected in 5th round of NFL Draft

DJ Giddens was once an overlooked high school football recruit.

Now he’s on his way to the NFL.

Giddens, a former standout running back for the Kansas State Wildcats, will play for the Indianapolis Colts next season. The Junction City product was selected with the No. 151 overall pick in the fifth round of the draft Saturday.

He will be expected to help the Colts immediately in the backfield next season.

What you saw from Giddens at K-State is likely what you will continue seeing from him in the NFL.

The electric playmaker had a brilliant three-year run with the Wildcats that featured 3,087 yards and 23 touchdowns as a rusher. He also added 58 catches for 679 yards and four scores as a receiver.

Giddens was best known for his durability and his bruising running style, but he showed off speed and elusiveness last season.

That could make him an ideal plug-and-play candidate in an NFL backfield.

He has come a long way since his teenage years, when he was an unknown recruit. Giddens didn’t have so much as a recruiting profile when he signed with K-State. He is one of the rare zero-star recruits to work his way to the NFL.
