K-State basketball coach Jerome Tang lands high-scoring transfer guard from Monmouth

A high-scoring transfer is on his way to Kansas State.

Abdi Bashir, a 6-foot-7 sophomore guard who averaged 20.1 points per game at Monmouth, has announced his plans to play for the Wildcats next season.

He will look to prove himself in a power conference after two strong years at the mid-major level.

Bashir is coming off a breakthrough season with the Hawks. He was the leading scorer on his team, and he put up some big numbers over the course of the year. He scored at least 25 points in 11 different games, with his season-high coming against Rutgers when he poured in 38. But he also hit the 30-point mark in games against Drexel, Northeastern and Stephen F. Austin.

Simply put, he knows how to score.

Originally from Omaha, Bashir made 38.3% of his shots from 3-point range and 86.8% of his shots from the free-throw line.

He did most of his scoring from beyond the arc, where he made 127 of 332 shots.

The combo guard will have an opportunity to immediately compete for a spot in K-State’s starting lineup next season, as the Wildcats are looking for a replacement for Brendan Hausen, who announced his transfer plans on Monday, and possibly Max Jones, who is seeking an extra year of eligibility.

He will be expected to help the Wildcats on offense next season. But he may need to develop his game in other areas. Defense has never been his forte, and he only averaged 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game last season.

Bashir is the first incoming transfer that K-State basketball coach Jerome Tang has landed this offseason.
