Wichita State senior Erik Harbutz singled in the second inning, his first hit since March 25 against Nebraska. Three days later, he collided with a teammate in the outfield against Cal State Fullerton. The resulting strained medial collateral ligament in his right knee kept him out until Tuesday’s game against Kansas State.
Harbutz is healthy enough to DH, with Tanner Dearman ready to pinch-run for him in the late innings.
“The knee feels pretty good,” he said. “I’m just trying to get some at-bats under my belt.”
Harbutz started 11 games and hit .286 before the injury. If the first two games of his return are an indication, he can help the Shockers. He hit the ball hard twice even while going 0 for 3 on Tuesday. On Friday, he singled twice and drove in two runs.
“I felt pretty comfortable,” he said. “Obviously, timing, you have to see pitches to feel more comfortable.”
WSU coach Todd Butler has been waiting to add another experienced hitter to his lineup. Harbutz has started 171 games in his career.
“We’ve missed him, his leadership, his experience,” Butler said.On the list
WSU first baseman Casey Gillaspie is one of 30 players on the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball’s honor for the nation’s top amateur player, watch list.
Evansville pitcher Kyle Freeland is also on the list. Semifinalists will be announced May 27 and the trophy will be awarded July 17 in Los Angeles.
Gillaspie, a junior from Omaha, is hitting .400 with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs.
WSU two-way player Darren Dreifort won the Golden Spikes Award in 1993. Closer Braden Looper, in 1996, is the last Shocker to be a finalist for the award.Worth noting
