KC Mavericks’ Borchardt fuels record-breaking week with 2 hat tricks; Star Wars is next
The Kansas City Mavericks delivered a week of hockey that will be remembered for years, with milestone moments, record-setting performances and a dominant three-game sweep.
The Mavericks’ victories over the Utah Grizzlies not only extended their dominance but also propelled them to first place in the Mountain Division.
Here’s a recap, with a look ahead to this week:
Tough win in series opener
The Mavericks carried their recent momentum into a three-game series against the Utah Grizzlies that started last Wednesday.
KC won the opener 3-2 on goals from Nolan Sullivan, Cade Borchardt and Damien Giroux. Jack LaFontaine’s 28 saves helped the Mavericks hold off Utah’s late surge, setting the tone for what would become a historic week.

After a close series opener, the Mavericks hammered the Grizzlies 6-1 Friday.

Saturday night’s series finale was one for the record books: The Mavericks dismantled Utah 10-3 in one of the most dominant performances in franchise history.
Borchardt, skating in his 100th professional game, delivered a career-best performance with four goals and six points, tying franchise records for goals and points in a game.
His seven goals over a two-game span also set a new Mavericks record, cementing his place as one of the league’s most dynamic players.
Borchardt’s achievements weren’t the only milestones of the night. Defenseman Marcus Crawford recorded his 250th professional point and Max Andreev, Casey Carreau, and Jackson Berezowski also had key contributions for the Mavericks.
The evening featured an unexpected twist when Ostman dropped the gloves in a rare goalie fight, energizing his teammates the rest of the way.
Kansas City’s dominance extended beyond individual achievements, too. The Mavericks tied their all-time record for goals in a game, last achieved in 2019. With 19 over three games, the Mavericks showcased their depth and firepower, moving into first place in the ECHL Mountain Division with a 14-6-1-1 record.
Cade Borchardt enters the week as the league’s top scorer, leading the ECHL in points (28), goals (19) and plus/minus (+25). His four-game goal streak and nine goals over that span have been crucial during the Mavericks’ four-game win streak.
