The Kansas City Mavericks return to Cable Dahmer Arena on Saturday to close out a series against the Tulsa Oilers.

The Mavericks lost the first game of the series in Tulsa on Wednesday, falling 3-2.

After Saturday’s game in Independence, the Mavericks will make a quick trip to Wichita to face the Thunder on Sunday.

Here’s a recap of the Mavs’ recent road trip, against the Tahoe Knight Monsters — KC earned a 2-1 win in the final matchup of the series after dropping the first two games.

The team also made a meaningful impact off the ice this week, volunteering at Wayside Waifs, Kansas City’s largest no-kill animal shelter.

Here’s what to know as we catch up with the Mavericks:

On the ice: series recap

The Mavericks showed resilience against Tahoe Knight Monsters:

  • Game 1: KC fell 4-1 in the series opener on Wednesday, Nov. 20, despite outshooting Tahoe 33-28. Damien Giroux scored the lone goal for the Mavericks, but Tahoe’s Jordan Papirny was a wall in net, stopping 32 of 33 shots.

  • Game 2: On Friday, Nov. 22, the Mavericks staged a thrilling comeback from a three-goal deficit to force overtime but lost 6-5. Cade Borchardt tied the game late in the third period, but Tahoe’s Logan Nelson scored the game-winner in OT.

  • Game 3: KC avoided a sweep on Saturday, Nov. 23, winning 2-1. Borchardt opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game, while Luke Loheit added the game-winner in the third period. Victor Ostman was stellar in net, stopping 30 of 31 shots.

The players began their visit with a tour of the facility, followed by some quality time with new puppies that had recently arrived. They then helped unload a trailer filled with donated pet supplies, including dog and cat food, toys, and other essentials.

To finish their visit, the players decorated the adoption center for the holidays, assisting with Wayside’s “Adopt-a-Center” initiative.

As part of this program, visitors to Wayside Waifs can select “snowballs” featuring donation requests to support the shelter’s efforts.

Throughout November, the Mavericks have been donating a dog leash for every adoption at Wayside Waifs. So far, over 140 leashes have been donated.

Wayside Waifs planned to be at the Mavericks’ next home game (Saturday, Nov. 30) against the Tulsa Oilers. Fans will have the chance to meet some very special guests from the shelter both on the concourse and during in-game features.
